Grant programme

Alex TLC provides small financial grants for families and individuals affected by leukodystrophy.

We provide financial support to patients and families for access to equipment, care or therapy, those undergoing Bone Marrow Transplant/Gene Therapy or for families in financial hardship or going through bereavement. Grants are given for items and treatments not otherwise covered by the NHS, or relevant health service in your country.

Working alongside React

We are working alongside React Charity who provide assistance to financially disadvantaged families who care for a child with a life-shortening illness. Financial help ranges from specialist equipment / mobility equipment, such as car seats, buggies, wheelchairs, trikes, hoists, postural chairs or adjustable beds, to educational equipment such as kitchen appliances, clothing and bedding.

Case studies : Paul’s Wheelchair

We worked alongside other charities to enable Paul to get this amazing wheelchair which has completely changed his life, his mum Kerry said:

“I just wanted to share with you the wonderful news that Paul has now received his Permobil wheelchair. It’s absolutely amazing and he’s so excited. It’s amazing how he can now see and do things that have always been out of his reach before, looking out of the window, seeing himself in mirrors and opening cupboard doors.

It’s surreal to see him moving around in an upright position. Such a boost for him after months of shielding. He’s adjusting to driving front wheel drive but has got the multiple controls pretty sorted in just a few days. Please do pass on our thanks to everyone at AlexTLC for the grant towards the chair.”

Case studies : Kim & Danny’s Garden

Kim and Danny have also benefitted from support and grants from the charity. The clearest indicator for this is, unusually, the family garden. Overgrown and uneven, Kim’s legs and Danny’s eyes had prevented either of them from using this space. A grant from Alex TLC helped them to renovate the garden, laying down concrete and removing weeds to make a more accessible and welcoming outdoor area for them.
